A rule of thumb that I've used in the past is, "If I have to ask, the
answer is probably no".  You can never go wrong with that.  (And it
works in the office, too!)

I too must confess that I too do not go to as many open meets as I did
in years past because, in part, of the aforementioned "socially inept"
furs.  I've since tended to hang out with friends and "friends of
friends" and have found that I have just as good a time.
