Here's the real deal on Vista, so far as I've seen to date.
I've got a machine running Vista 32 bit with an 8600GT superclocked
card, Core2Duo 6550, 680i Nforce EVGA board, and about 2 Gb of Ram.
I've never had a problem with this machine, besides a few minor issues
with older or odd/off company game incompatibilities, most of which DO
have workarounds if you look for them.
The inside word on XP by the way, is that they're discontinuing in
June/July, so you might want to learn/look at upgrading soon. Yes,
bargain bin machines are going to have issues running it, but in my
experience, if you have 3 things, you're generally fine. A) A DECENT
video card. By decent, I mean around 50-100, for which you can get an
8000 series nvidia card. B) At LEAST 2 Gb of Ram. This is a must. C)
a minimum of the E6550 core2duo. Not the older intel dual cores, they
run like crap.
If you meet the above, all of which you can put into a system today for
about 800-1000 max retail somewhere like newegg or tigerdirect, you can
run vista with pretty damn decent speed. I'm running on a system like
this for under 1k, and damn near maxing out bioshock's setup. Avoid the
8800 series video, it's basically just overpriced stuff for the total
geeks with extra cash. Works a LOT more beautifully, but there's no
sense buying it with the new series coming out every quarter or two.
Other note... definitely go for a self/configured machine rather than
with the big boys. Dell/etc tend to get big loads of low end equipment,
or at the very least, proprietary stuff that has issues with other
hardware when upgrading. for a couple bucks more in the long run,
you'll be able to build a system that will last, and be upgradeable
beyond what you start with.
