Well, not for that you don't.  Run XP.  hehe.  But seriously, most of my 
customers aren't thrilled about the move, but what can you do besides 
boycott and go to ubuntu/etc if you're geeky enough to know/learn it?  
Most of the end users out there can't do that, so they're going to be 
forcibly migrated to vista eventually whether they like it or not, same 
as they were for XP/etc.

That said, generally you can get really reasonable performance out of a 
$40 2 Gb crucial ram kit, and a 7300GT for less than $50, if you don't 
mind turning off all the vista bells and whistles. Hell, with that exact 
setup I ran from about August to a week ago, albeit my games ran on 
lower end settings.
