Hey James,

Depends what OS you're running, what exactly happened to it, and how it
killed itself. If the drive itself took a bork and the heads crashed
(usually characterized by loud noises from the drive when you try to
boot the system, and the inability to get anywhere past the BIOS
checks), then you're most likely out of luck. There's services that can
strip data directly off the plates, but generally unless it's financial
data, it's not worth paying their charge to do so.

If it's just the OS that's shot, and the drive is fine, most times you
can simply hok it up to another working computer as a slave and rip the
data you need right off of it. I'm not a pittsburgher, but that's a
very general assessment. Based on your issue, you might want to get a
pro in on things to check it out, see what's up, and try to recover
what's on it. If it's just a lot of furry pr0n, and some other random
pics and stuff, Might be loads cheaper just to find what you can again,
and start over with the rest. Lord knows it wouldn't be the first time
I've done that.

Otherwise, if anyone else has a bit more knowledge than I do, beyond the
usual 'heads crashed? replace the drive and learn to back up data in the
future', please lend a paw as there's not much else I can really say.
